Well howdy, partner! Now, we’ve tried to recreate a little bit of that Pioneer Town spirit here at Star Dune Ranch but for a full experience we recommend a quick drive over to Pioneertown!
Pioneertown is one of the most unique and charming communities in the Mojave Desert. Let’s mosey on over and take a closer look!
Back in the 1940s, a group of Hollywood investors, including actors Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, wanted to create an authentic Old West town that could serve as a movie set for their Western films. They found a spot in the desert near Yucca Valley and began building Pioneertown.
The town was designed to look and feel like an 1880s frontier town, complete with saloons, jails, and a hotel. The buildings were constructed with facades that could be easily rearranged to create different sets for different films.
But Pioneertown was more than just a movie set. It was also a place where actors, directors, and crew members could stay while they were working on films. The Pioneertown Hotel, which still stands today, provided lodging for these folks, and the town even had its own Western-themed radio station.
Eventually, as the film industry changed and Westerns fell out of fashion, Pioneertown became less of a movie set and more of a community. People began buying up the buildings and turning them into businesses, including a post office, a bowling alley, and a restaurant.
Today, Pioneertown is a charming and quirky town with a population of around 400 people. Visitors can stroll down Mane Street and admire the Old West architecture, or catch a live music show at Pappy and Harriet’s, a famous honky-tonk that has hosted everyone from Paul McCartney to Robert Plant.
The town is also surrounded by some of the most stunning natural scenery in the Mojave Desert, including Joshua Tree National Park and the San Bernardino National Forest. Visitors can hike, bike, or horseback ride through these beautiful landscapes, or even go on a Jeep tour or a hot air balloon ride to get a bird’s-eye view of the desert.
To get to Pioneertown from Star Dune Ranch, you’ll want to follow these directions:
